AB - The paper explicates the Epicurean materialistic worldview which, by positing exclusively the existence of atoms as the basic constituents of everything existing, excludes any other form of the world’s origin, especially gods. During the perpendicularly motion of atoms, falling from above downwards in parallel lines, nothing would ever happen if there were no extremely small swerve of atoms from their usual path. Only swerve, as an inherent property of atoms, besides enabling the collision of atoms and the formation of their conglomerates, i.e., everything that exists, also, as Epicurus believed, enables freedom itself, i.e., freedom of will and decision-making in humans. The paper demonstrates that the swerve of atoms, although perhaps necessary, is not a sufficient condition for attributing freedom to the agents.

AB - Philosophers have argued that stakes affect knowledge: a given amount of evidence may suffice for knowledge if the stakes are low, but not if the stakes are high. By contrast, empirical work on the influence of stakes on ordinary knowledge ascriptions has been divided along methodological lines: “evidence-fixed” prompts rarely find stakes effects, while “evidence-seeking” prompts consistently find them. We present a cross-cultural study using both evidence-fixed and evidence-seeking prompts with a diverse sample of 17 populations in 11 countries, speaking 14 languages. Our study is the first to use an evidence-seeking prompt cross-culturally, and includes several previously untested populations (including indigenous populations). Across cultures, we do not find evidence of a stakes effect with our evidence-fixed prompt, but do with our evidence-seeking prompt. We argue that the divergent results reveal a tension within folk epistemology: people's beliefs about when it is appropriate to ascribe knowledge differ significantly from their actual practice in ascribing knowledge.

Escape from the Agora to the Garden in the contemporary Balkans

AB - In my presentation, I plan to discuss a contemporary phenomenon that is increasingly noticeable—an attenuated interest in public and political affairs in the modern Balkans. I aim to draw parallels with ancient times to highlight historical patterns and contrasts. The elections in the western Balkans over the past decade have seen an average turnout of approximately 50%. The low participation can be attributed to a prevailing belief among citizens that elections bring about little change. Consequently, a significant portion of the population chooses to abstain from active engagement in public affairs.

I believe that the foundation and explanation for this disinterest can be found in the ancient philosophical tradition, more precisely, in the Epicurean school. Namely, Epicurus organized his school in the garden outside the city walls, which aimed to be completely independent and self-sufficient. Epicurus attitude towards political activity (that can be subsumed under maxim “live unnoticed”) was completely different from his famous predecessors. Aristotle, for example, believed that an individual could attain self-realization only within the political community. Plato would agree with Aristotle; and even apart from the philosophical schools, individuals from aristocratic families typically embraced comparable viewpoints.

A parallel can be drawn between the political landscapes of ancient Greece following the conquests of Alexander the Great and the present-day political scenario in the Balkans, which find themselves in the waiting room for Europe. In both cases, a common feature is the erosion of trust in political institutions. In times of political collapse, the attention transitions from the Agora to the Garden, mirroring the historical example of ancient Greece where ordinary individuals sought to safeguard their lives by withdrawing from active social involvement. Being repeatedly disappointed by their political representatives, the individuals from the Balkans retreat into their shells or niches, seeking peace and wellbeing in their own microcosm.

AB - The emergence of crowdfunding as a means to gather financial
support for medical expenses has become a global phenomenon. As the prevalence
of medical crowdfunding increases within regional contexts, including in Serbia,
this article aims to offer a framework for understanding this phenomenon and its
ramifications. Drawing upon a review of literature and research mostly pertaining
to Anglo-Saxon crowdfunding practices, we contend that the proliferation of
medical crowdfunding, which is facilitated by technological advancements,
signifies inherent deficiencies within healthcare systems, exacerbated by the
erosion of the welfare state. While addressing immediate financial exigencies for
some individuals, this practice engenders substantial social, political, and ethical
dilemmas. Structured into three sections, the article contextualizes the catalysts
propelling the emergence of medical crowdfunding, notably the transformations
in welfare regimes. Subsequently, it delves into the opportunities and challenges
presented by crowdfunding for medical expenses, while the third section delineates
the implications for healthcare systems and policies, underscoring the necessity for
research elucidating medical crowdfunding within the contexts of post-socialist
countries.
razumevanje fenomena grupnog finanisranja lečenja putem donacija i njegovih
posledica.
otvara značajne društvene, političke i etičke dileme. Strukturiran u tri odeljka,

AB - This paper deals with the contemporary, dynamic relation between people and the places they inhabit, by examining whether relative antique philosophical concepts – eudaimonia and hedonism – might serve as a basis for what we call today well-being. Further, this paper explores Socrates’ and Plato’s belief that a polis (ancient city-state) was a significant social phenomenon, far more important than individuals’ well-being. Building upon this premise, the paper navigates the intricate relationship between individual and collective wellbeing within modern urban contexts. The thin line between hedonism and self-interest is investigated in the contemporary urban framework – that of an individualistic, consumerist, and materialistic world, with limited and shared spaces and resources. In conclusion, this paper advocates for a rethinking of the ancient Greek polis as a source of inspiration for reimagining urban futures, by integrating historical wisdom with contemporary urban planning practices to foster more equitable, sustainable, and fulfilling urban environments.

Collective Memory-Work: Research as an In(ter)vention in Uncertain Times

AB - Collective-memory work is an engaged participatory methodology that has roots in sociological and critical-psychological scholarship but is not widely known and used in psychological research. The purpose of this paper is to present this approach in terms of its key characteristics and applicability to psychological research, as well as to highlight its creative, reflective, and engaged aspects as relevant for research conducted during uncertain and challenging times. The main purpose of collective-memory work is to critically investigate how personal experience is being socially constructed and constituted, both by social practices and relations (socialization) and by oneself (subjectification). By employing writing as the main tool, collective memory-work provides a safe environment to invent and reinvent oneself through multiple versions of the text but is nevertheless relentlessly analytical and intentionally disruptive when it comes to comprehending one’s role in oppressive social practices and interpersonal relationships. Not only does it provide a space for creative and critical self-reflection, but it is also a place for scrutinizing one’s participation in social history as well as history itself. As the literature suggests, it becomes even more important to participate in the meaning-making processes when there is a crisis and the history and one’s position in it are unknown and ambiguous. Doing research based on writing and critical, reflective group discussions becomes a practice with a reverse effect—a resource for creating certainty and sense in uncertain times while at the same time obstructing the previously established status quo and paving the way for social change.

abstract = "Collective-memory work is an engaged participatory methodology that has roots in sociological and critical-psychological scholarship but is not widely known and used in psychological research. Doing research based on writing and critical, reflective group discussions becomes a practice with a reverse effect—a resource for creating certainty and sense in uncertain times while at the same time obstructing the previously established status quo and paving the way for social change.",

AB - In Serbia, several projects which can be characterized as mega-projects are currently
being implemented. The implementation of mega-projects can serve as a means of
consolidation of neoliberal authoritarianism, (re)centralization, and significant degradation of the institutional system protecting the public interest in planning, or the
degradation of the public’s right to participate in decision-making. As a “proto-democracy,” Serbia is particularly vulnerable to the harmful socio-economic consequences of implementing this mechanism of urban development. This systematic literature
review explores the scientific knowledge on the planning and implementation of mega-projects in Belgrade and Serbia, contributing to understanding the impact of mega-projects on the transformation of the institutional framework of urban planning in
Serbia. The results of the content analysis of twelve articles are presented through
criteria related to the social context of implementing mega-projects in Serbia, namely
through an analysis of mechanisms ensuring the legitimacy of mega-projects in Serbia, methods and consequences of decision-making, the relationship between the
state and investors (politics and big capital), benefits of mega-projects, and an analysis of mechanisms to control the negative effects of implementing mega-projects.
As a result of critical comparative analysis of the literature, possible further research
directions have been proposed towards determining the existence of any differences
in planning and implementation of mega-projects regarding the origin of the main investors, considering the political and social circumstances that make Serbia and the
Balkans strategically important in the global redistribution of political and economic
influence. Also, there is an indication of the need to expand the scope of research to
include any mega-projects planned after the start of the implementation of the Belgrade Waterfront project, to contribute to determining the real character and longterm consequences of the mechanisms activated for the purpose of implementing the
Belgrade Waterfront project on the transformation of the institutional framework of
planning in Serbia.

AB - Many interlinkages already exist between security and development, despite the fact they traditionally maintained separate bodies of literature and compartmentalized presence in policymaking. This article seeks to provide guidance on how to bridge the gap between the two. It focuses on the nexus between Security Sector Reform (SSR) and Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG-16 devoted to effective, accountable and inclusive institutions. It argues that the human security paradigm provides the most rewarding approach for bridging the gap between these two, as it centres the focus on the human element of these two endeavours. It first provides an overview of the security-development nexus, followed by a discussion of the commonalities and differences between SSR and SDG-16 specifically, outlining how human security provides a better connection between the two. It concludes that the bottom-up and multistakeholder approaches of the human security paradigm and its context-specific perspective ensure that the SSR missions and attainment of the SDG-16 targets will be more effective and efficient.

Osmišljavanje crne Arijel iz filma Mala sirena među različitim belim publikama

AB - Film Mala sirena (The Little Mermaid) i serije Prstenovi moći (Rings of Power) i Kuća zmaja (House of the Dragon) usmerili su pažnju javnosti u 2022. godini na trend povećanja reprezentacije ljudi različitih rasa među glavnim protagonistima serija i filmova koji se odvija tokom poslednje decenije.
AB - The film The Little Mermaid and the series Rings of Power and House of the Dragon
drew public attention in 2022 to the trend of increasing racial diversity among the
main protagonists in films and TV series over the past decade. What is common to
these productions is that they are all new adaptations of globally popular book-toscreen adaptations, and in all three, the main protagonists were Black compared to
the original adaptations featuring a White cast. After the audience noticed the changes in the cast, various discourses were promoted in the public sphere, some of which
welcomed the changes while others viewed them as unscrupulous revisionism that
should be boycotted.
In order to contribute to the public debate on this topic, this paper will utilise psychological theories and empirical evidence to support the thesis that a diverse cast can
contribute to a moderate reduction in average racial prejudices in a global White audience. According to the vicarious contact hypothesis, the White audience, based on
observing the positive intergroup contacts that Black Ariel makes with White characters, can conceptualize the possibilities of establishing better intergroup contacts in
their own lives. According to the mere exposure effect, it is beneficial for the White
audience to be simply exposed to Black actors, and according to the parasocial contact hypothesis, what’s beneficial is the intense, hours-long relationship with specific
actors or characters mediated through the screen. One obstacle to the claim that the
aformentioned studies support the thesis is that in registered average reductions in
prejudices, there are always participants who show a significantly greater shift than
the average, as well as those for whom there is no change. The thesis is futher supported with situated understanding of narrow White publics that can use the Black
Ariel to meaningfully shape their intergroup experiences beyond the screen.
I have considered two possible audiences. The first audience is immersed in the meanings of woke culture, which offers a certain number of discourses through which they
can position themselves regarding the Black Ariel. I argued that this audience will not
conceptualize a diverse cast as a resource to improve their intergroup contacts, only
to possition themselves in the discourse of structural rasicm. The second audience
will consume these revised contents merely as traditional cultural elements, even as
common-sense elements of natural reality, making it easier for Black Ariel to subsequently become an implicit or explicit symbolic resource for the audience to shape
better intergroup experiences beyond the screen.

AB - The paper addresses the relationship between the concepts of becoming and imitation in
Deleuze and Guattari’s thought and how they assist us in understanding their conception
of stupidity. In the first step, the paper argues that, contrary to prevailing views in the
secondary literature, there is a positive relationship between mimesis and becoming in
Deleuze and Guattari’s philosophy. Instead of merely serving as a negative idea to be
denounced, it will be argued that the concept of imitation also plays a role in Deleuze and
Guattari’s understanding of becoming. I show that the concept of imitation accomplishes
this in three ways: 1) imitation is a molar relationship which parallels the molecular process
of becoming, 2) imitation may act as a pathway to becoming, and finally, 3) imitation is an
inherent danger in becoming. In the next step, I use this examination of the two concepts
to flesh out Deleuze’s notion of stupidity, demonstrating why it also plays a positive role in
generating thought, acting both as the “greatest weakness of thought”, and as the “source
of its highest power” (Difference and Repetition, p. 275).

Deleuze and Guattari’s philosophy. Instead of merely serving as a negative idea to be

Epikurejsko razumijevanje empatije: prijateljstvo

AB - In this article, we consider Derrida’s grasp on counter-institution and outline a peculiar modality of ethics that it engenders. After evoking his counter-institutional public engagements in the introduction, we begin an analysis of the word counter-institution. In the first place, the polysemy of its prefix “counter” is exposed, followed by the claim that in Derrida’s philosophy this term denotes proximity and contact, rather than opposition – thus determining the architecture of the counter-institution. Furthermore, we discuss Derrida’s critique of traditional, sovereign institutions that he saw as unjust and violent, relating it to his theory of decision, and making the claim that counter-institutions are inseparable from justice. In the second part, we conceptualize what is named the counter-ethics of promise and responsibility. By juxtaposing Derrida’s unorthodox views on the notions of promise and responsibility, we seek to formulate a counter-ethical thought that animates the relations in and of the counter-institution and challenges the limits of ethics. Finally, we propose that Derrida’s idea of unfaithful fidelity could be understood as the very condition counter-ethics, and by consequence, of deconstruction.

AB - While Hermann Levin Goldschmidt didn’t read Yiddish anarchists, there
seems to have been a convergent evolution in their thinking. Goldschmidt’s looking up to Jewish lore as a source of liberating creativity is commonly encountered
in Yiddish anarchist texts. His view of action as a constant response to internal and
external challenges in the struggle for an open future is developed by Isaac Nachman Steinberg on the basis of nineteenth-century vitalism. Goldschmidt’s theory of
anarchist individualism as willed self-limiting solidarity has a compelling parallel
in Hillel Solotaroff ’s view of history. His use of impressionism and photography to
eternalize the immediacy of human actuality is akin to Rudolf Rocker’s championing
of decadent literature. In both cases, the goal of anarchism is not a dictatorship of
the former downtrodden, but a continuous and contradictory evolution of freedom
in ever-changing contexts.

The battle for Belgrade's historic riverfront Citizen resistance to radical urban changes

AB - Heritage, whilst concerned with the past, is now widely accepted to be inherently “present orientated” and political, because decisions concerning which parts of the past are deemed to be remembered and protected play a key role in how groups portray their peoples’ history, shared identity and collective memory to the outside world (Ashworth, Graham and Tunbridge 2007; Butler 2006; CoE 2009; Lowenthal 1998; and Peckham 2003). Planning decisions and government-led regeneration schemes can be interpreted as part of a wider “authorised heritage discourse” (Smith 2006) that reflects how those responsible for managing change to historic urban landscapes value the heritage and social fabric of their city.

This paper will analyse how through interventions in their urban fabric, nations narrate their histories by conserving, neglecting and destroying their built heritage. The focus will be on Belgrade's riverfront: the confluence of two international rivers – Sava and Danube – the strategic point for the city's birth and development by virtue of its topographical and natural features (Cvijić 2013). This area has lately become the centre of attention in the ongoing process of Belgrade's radical urban change.

How the built environment becomes a “contact zone” (Stephanides 2003) where “regimes of memory” (Radstone and Hodgkin 2003) are constantly being (re)negotiated will be explored through the consideration of three contemporary cases around the Belgrade riverfront. The agonistic struggles (Mouffe 2005, 2013) and political contestation associated with one of these three cases - the Belgrade Waterfront (Datoo 2018; Eror 2015; Shephard 2016; Surk 2018) offer an insight into levels of resentment against the neoliberal prioritisation of external investment over the retention of the authentic neighbourhoods of the city.

AB - This article reconsiders one of the most important theories of romantic love in contemporary philosophy, the theory of love as union. Drawing on observations from transpersonal research, the article raises
the question whether it is not worthwhile to accept, at least partially, a strong sense of union in the context of
love. Thus the article takes a position that is not taken by anyone in contemporary philosophy. In this context,
the article also briefly analyses one of the most important variants of love as union, a union with God. At the
end, the suggestion is made that it makes more sense to talk about connections rather than relations in the
case of fulfilled love.

Explanatory Account of the Human Language Faculty: The Developmentalist Challenge and Biolinguistics

AB - The aim of this paper is to explore whether Maria Kronfeldner’s analysis of human nature could be applied to the concept of cognitive systems and related capabilities, such as the human language faculty. Firstly, I will address the nature-nurture debate, that is, explanatory claims of nature as having a role in causing the language ability, and explanatory claims of culture as responsible for the development of human language capabilities. The nature-nurture divide generates a problem since it overlooks the interaction of nature and culture during the development of language capabilities, the problem called the developmentalist challenge. I will demonstrate different standpoints that try to answer this challenge, most famously the constructivist theory of Jean Piaget and the theory of universal grammar of Noam Chomsky. Following the insights of Kronfeldner, if we opt for an explanatory (and not classificatory or descriptive) account of the human language, we will search for the explanatory epistemic roles and their fulfilments. As Kronfeldner states, different sciences search for different differences regarding explanandum, and I hope to show that the integrative interdisciplinary framework dealing with cognitive systems is needed. The conclusion is that biolinguistics is an interdisciplinary field with a necessary unifying potential regarding explanatory account of the human language faculty.
i teoriju univerzalne gramatike Noama Čomskog.

What is Wrong with Anti-Paternalism?

AB - The article scrutinizes anti-paternalistic arguments concerning the best judgements, the autonomy and the moral status of persons. The first two have been criticized by Quong as inadequate, and the article attempts to point out the shortcomings of this critique. The best judgement argument can be reformulated, having in mind particular situations in which person’s own judgement should be considered as decisive. The autonomy argument cannot be disregarded as too permissive regarding paternalism as it allows paternalistic interventions, which are weak and confined only to a strictly limited scope. Also, when considered as the condition for the validity of choice, autonomy cannot be treated as an ultimate value. Finally, the moral status argument proposed by Quong is plausible to some extent, when claiming that it is presumptively wrong to treat persons as not having equal moral powers. However, this argument does not cover the legitimate institutional policies in specific cases when it can be reasonably presumed that people will omit to act in favour of their well-being. Also, this argument would prohibit any interventions in order to increase availability of goods, even if the moral status of the persons is not affected.
i moralni status osobe.

Josef Albers’ Methodology 'Learning through Conscious Practice' As a Teaching Form for Education in Architecture

AB - The paper discuss the methodological turn that was brought by the pedagogical practice
of Josef Albers at the Bauhaus from 1923 to 1933. This period is observed as the formative
platform of Albers’ teaching model, which generated all his later artistic and pedagogical
engagements. Although Albers’ courses were part of the training in a design-art school that changed
its curricula several times over ten years, the emphasis here is placed on the intention of the
Bauhaus to conceive design education as an (interdisciplinary) collaboration and as an anticipation
of a new form of creativity directed toward the building “that would embrace architecture and
sculpture and painting in one unity.” Albers taught the preliminary course (Vorkurs) that preceded
the craft-studies workshops and was intended to prepare students for the “conscious” treatment
of materials. The written reflections on learning methods, which Albers developed while teaching
in Vorkurs, expose the key notions of his forward-thinking pedagogical approach that is situated
between material form, design education and architecture.

AB - This chapter tackled the reception of Dewey’s work in different political eras of an other-than-Western context, namely, that of former Yugoslavia and Serbia. The chapter shows how different ideological positioning of the state politics in different eras, within a relatively short time line, informed the reading, interpretation and application of Dewey’s work. The lessons for an emancipatory classroom practice is the consideration of how ideological and political positioning of any country/state informs the reception of any ideas, whether they are deemed emancipatory or not.

AB - The triangle of crisis-education-emancipation seems to represent a stable both conceptual and historical constant, which then appears in almost countless modes, depending on how those three always co-defining terms are understood. We have offered, a cogent and representative, albeit not all-encompassing or exhaustive, spectrum of these understandings—sometimes they seem so different that it might be more appropriate to talk about all these pivotal concepts in the plural: about educations, emancipations and crises. Nevertheless, we decided to gather them all around or within a processual figure that is marked by the insight into the crisis, the will for emancipation, and the vision of emancipatory or emancipated education. We believe monistic structure and its over-determinants will not cloud the readers’ view of the presented plurality of their manifestations.

Does Education Require Emancipation? A Historical Analysis

AB - The conventional framing of the relation of education and emancipation asks what kind of education is in place, possible, or desirable for some specific emancipatory goal. This question draws on a long and important tradition, advocacy for and sometimes even assumption of education as liberatory. In this view, acquisition of knowledge is ipso facto beneficial. The aim of this text is to probe the nature and viability of the emancipatory potential ascribed to knowledge. To that end, the chapter first sketches a model of the emancipatory conception of education, before calling it into question, that is, criticizing the instrumentalization of education for emancipation. The final considerations revolve around the question whether it is not better to emancipate education from the requirement of emancipation as well, rather than educate having a specific, set emancipatory aim in mind at the outset. Put bluntly—and to give the problem a “dialectic” twist—is it not better to conceive of education not through emancipation, but as emancipation itself, thus equating the terms?
